The White Continent, Antarctica, is one of the last remaining wild places. It is a land of immeasurable ice and snow, yet incredible wildlife. We will embark on a twelve day trip aboard a retired Russian research boat, the Professor Multanovskiy. We will depart from the port of Ushuaia in Argentina. We will spend two days cruising through the Drake Passage to the South Shetland Islands. This impressive group of islands, lying to the north and roughly parallel to the Antarctic Peninsula, is a haven for wildlife, including vast penguin rookeries, Antarctic fur seals and wallowing southern elephant seals.
From there we will move on to the Antarctic Peninsula, awe-inspiring wilderness of snow, ice, waterways and mountains and can expect to see a wide variety of Antarctic wildlife. Enormous rookeries of Gentoo, Chinstrap and Adélie Penguins, Blue-eyed Shags, Kelp Gulls, Cape Petrels, Snowy Sheathbills and Antarctic Terns are just some of the many birds found here in abundance. We are also likely to see Weddell, crabeater and leopard seals, while orcas, humpback whales and Minke whales are often encountered at close range.
